Big changes are coming to Universal Orlando Resort – in the form of a new Water Park – Volcano Bay.
Universal will close Wet-n-Wild to make room for this new park. Opening in 1977, Wet ‘n Wild, Orlando was one of America’s first water parks. It will close down permanently Dec 31, 2016.
Universal’s Volcano Bay is planned to be a next generation waterpark, with innovative rides, tranquil relaxation and experiences for the entire family. Volcano Bay is being constructed on approximately 53 acres (21 ha) of the resort complex’s overall property. Artist’s concepts show a thrill slide coming from the park’s central volcano, as well as a wave pool and other water slides. A lazy river and rapids slide are also shown on the plans, although park officials have stated they will reveal all of the park’s planned attractions at a later date.
Ground has already been broken for this tropical themed park, just south of Universal’s Cabana Bay Resort. Construction is expected to move quickly, and the company has announced that the park will open sometime in 2017. Volcano Bay will round out Universal’s Islands of Adventure, and Universal Studios Orlando very nicely.
With Walt Disney World® announcing the opening Avatar Expansion of Animal Kingdom that same year, 2017 it promises to be an interesting year for new park experiences.
