Summer is over and you still haven’t made it to Walt Disney World® Resort?  No worries!  Vacationing at Disney during the school year is an excellent time to go.  While everyone may not agree with taking kids out of school for vacation,  Walt Disney World® is not just a vacation.  It is also and educational experience!  Instead of thinking of it as taking your kids out of school, think of it as taking your children on an incredible, multi-day field trip!

literature edu trip 6In this post, we will take a look at each park and see what educational experiences we can find.  First, we’ll start with Magic Kingdom® Park.  One big thing here that you can spend a lot of time on before you ever leave for your vacation is Fairy Tales. The Magic Kingdom® Park is full of Fairy Tales!  Most children know all about the Disney versions that are represented in the Magic Kingdom® Park, but what about the original versions of these fairy tales?  This is a great opportunity to find the original versions of a few of the stories and read them together as a family. (Parents, please read the story first to make sure it is appropriate for the age of your child/children.) See there?  You haven’t even left for your vacation yet, and you’ve already given your children a fun literature lesson!

Another great educational treasure at Magic Kingdom® Park is Liberty Square.  You can start with the Hall of Presidents.  For those who are not familiar with this classic attraction, your children will get a glimpse of all of our nation’s presidents through the magic of Disney animatronics, complete with Abraham’s Lincoln delivering his famous Gettysburg Address.  From there you can find a wealth of learning experiences all around you. Explore this land well before moving on! Check out such things as the Liberty Bell, the tree beside the Liberty Bell, and always be sure to read the plaques. In this one area of the park, you can have a great History lesson!

Next on the list is Epcot®.  This park is all about education!  From Future World to the World Showcase, there are educational experiences at every turn! In Future World, you can learn all about space on the Mission: SPACE® Attraction.  At the Ellen’s Energy Adventure attraction, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, you can learn about fossil fuels and conservation.  Innoventions® Entertainment Facility is jam packed with hands on science and technology kiosks that the whole family can enjoy!

Moving into World Showcase at Epcot®, you can learn about all the different countries represented; how others live, speak, dress and eat. Also, most of the cast members throughout the World Showcase are actually from the countries they represent and can be a great source of information for the inquisitive little minds in your group.

At Disney’s Hollywood Studios™ guests have an opportunity to dive into the movies!  You can l

earn how special effects are created on the Backlot Tour; how stunts are performed via the Indiana Jones Stunt show or the Lights, Motors, Action!®  Extreme Stunt Show®.  You can even get in on the action yourself in one of the audience participation shows!

edu trip 5Disney’s Animal Kingdom® Theme Park is all about the animals!  Each area at  Disney’s Animal Kingdom® focuses on animals native to that part of the world.  Be sure to visit each “continent” and learn the animals from that area, including their habitats, what they eat, and what other animals they may be related to.  Guests can even enjoy a little “travel back in time” to learn more about dinosaurs.
Each park offers you the opportunity to teach your children how to read a map, manage money, and learn how the bus system works within the Walt Disney World® Resort, and much, much more!
The learning opportunities while on a Walt Disney World® Resort vacation are virtually endless!  If you take the time to look at the park maps before your trip, and do a little planning, I am sure that you too will see that Walt Disney World® can be the ultimate field trip of a lifetime!
